The full stretch of the famous sands sweeps out from below all the way to Sugarloaf Mountain, Arpoador’s cove-like beach is a 10-minute walk, and shopping and dining options abound, particularly the Galeria River arcade and the ever-lively ‘Baixo Copacabana’ nightlife hub that includes the sultry sounds of diminutive bar Bip Bip, a 15-minute walk up the seafront.

Woven fabrics adorn floors and walls along with wonderfully rough-hewn marble and the overall effect combines with lots of natural wood and the restaurant’s vast, living tropical wall to incredibly relaxing effect.

Friendly, informed and eager to please, the on-call butler, room turn-downs and beach service all make for a refreshing change to Rio’s all-too frequent hospitality recalcitrance. The soaring wall of greenery elevates the Emilie restaurant into something spectacular, as in fact does the food itself, thanks to French chef Damien Montecer’s magic touch with local seafood specialities mostly sourced from nearby Angra. Look no further than a steaming bowl of delicately rich seafood bouillabaisse or the beer-braised Kobe beef ribs with baby turnips. Light and fresh or rich and meat-heavy, it is a sophisticated menu with prices to match (mains start from around R$42/USD8).
The Wellness Breakfast involves beautiful platters of papaya, mango and pineapple, eggs and detox juice, or go continental for freshly baked breads, waffles and cheese.
